White walls always remind potential buyers of their first apartment -- not a wonderful custom home. It's amazing what a few gallons of paint can do in the right colors to warm the atmosphere!

I totally agree with you Deb!! Regarding the HGTV commmyth - I have had similar comments directed to me regarding these shows. It's amazing how people think that what they see on TV is real and easy to achieve. If all home sellers had access to a free designer and a generous budget, then we as professional stagers would be out of work. The truth of the matter is that every home is unique and getting them into a saleable condition requires creative and critical thinking skills, planning, organising and lots of hard work - not something that can be done in 30 minutes with a couple of ad breaks!!

Excellent advice. Like I always say, avoid the too B's -- Bland and Bold. Somewhere in between is nice!

Amazing post and great insight! I hear on a daily basis from stager that soem realtors think they are offering staging. Typically it turns out to be nothing more than removing person photos, and tossing a throw on a chair.

Agents can't offer the same as stagers because they are not doing it for a living. I dont see how they have access to what you have access to. In addition, if MY agent said they would stage my home I would be wondering, "Hmm, if you are staging my home and other peoples homes, when are you trying to SELL my home?"

Great point about incorporating bolder colors in the decor and fabrics. Neutralize doesn't mean sterilize!

This is a great post Deb and your points are so important for sellers to understand. Staging is truly an investment in getting your property ready for market and it's one that returns the investment!
