Max Ruthven, a home stager in Austin, Texas, points out that color is the center of the emotion that one feels when entering a room. In a new EnergizedSeller.com 90-second interview, she explains that color can have an amazing or devastating effect. Here are her five tips to make sure your walls are home-seller ready:
- Eggshell whites, beige and cream are out. Instead, use neutral colors that are warm and inviting and that appeal to a wide range of tastes. These colors will bring depth and character to your surroundings and still maintain a classic elegant look.
- The color scheme needs to be consistent throughout the whole house. Choose neutral hues on your walls and add color through accessories.
- Using complimentary colors in a room can be striking and dramatic. But avoid this technique when staging a home for sale if you’re not sure how to do it.
- Consider the relationship between color and light. Southern light is warmer, so use cool colors to tone down walls. Northern light is cooler and dimmer, so choose warmer colors.
- Don’t add faux painting when selling your house. If you have walls with faux painting on them, consult a professional stager and repaint if advised to do so.
The goal of a stager is to emotionally control the effects through successful use of color as a design tool. Remember, keep it simple, neutral and elegant.
