Your Pet May Horrify Home Buyers

Should you leave your precious pet on the premises while your for-sale home is being shown to prospective buyers? One house selling resource says no. EnergizedSeller.com, a website for home selling tips and home staging tips, encourages sellers to take their pet elsewhere during home showings.

“Many home buyers are turned off by animals, no matter how cute or lovable they may be," warns Karen Otto, a home stager and active member of EnergizedSeller.com. "A big percentage of the population is allergic, scared or disgusted by animals, especially in a home. By leaving an animal at a for-sale home during showings, a pet owner will be at a disadvantage with these buyers.”

“You might be used to your pet’s odor," adds Cindy Richter, another professional on EnergizedSeller.com. "But home buyers who don’t have a pet will notice the smell immediately when they walk into your home, and that's not the first impression you want to make.”

The question of whether home sellers should remove a scary pet from their home provoked such a strong reaction that EnergizedSeller.com decided to have a little fun and hold a pet photo contest.

“We asked EnergizedSeller.com members to submit pictures of pets that shouldn’t be left at home during showings to buyers,” explains EnergizedSeller.com President Dan Eason. "So far, we've received more than 40 photos of funny or scary-looking dogs, cats and other pets."

EnergizedSeller.com wants to make home sellers aware of this issue and encourage pet owners to take their pet elsewhere while their home is being shown to buyers. At the very least, sellers should get rid of all signs that the pet exists. That means food bowls, play toys, sleeping beds and all other pet-related items should be put out of sight.
