Can staging be considered being desperate?

I don't think so!  I met someone who was looking for a home to buy and was in a home that appeared staged.  Her realtor told her the seller was desperate because they staged the home for sale.  I was floored to hear such a referrence to staging.

My immediate reply to the person was that staging is simply putting the best product you can on the market.   Buyers do not want to see how we live in our homes.  They want to see what possibilities the home has in store for them.   I think people should have pride in what they are showing to others.  Any time I give away something of mine, that may have been used, I make sure it is spotless.  So, why not make our homes spotless and appeal to many buyers so that they can picture their lives and furnishings in our homes.  Staging helps to attrack more people and more offers.

We all know when a house gets placed on the market it is being compared to other homes that are for sale (it's called comps and that's how realtors are able to price a home) so why not make your home shines above the rest right from the start?  It saves time and money in the long run.

I could not believe staging was referred to as desperate!

Ignorance of the subject of home staging is what I'd call that comment Vicky & to be coming from a Realtor no less.

Staging is a marketing tool and one that should be used by all sellers whether they do it themselves or hire a professional home stager (preferred for at minimum a consultation to help them identify the areas they need to address).

We in this industry need to continue to educate others on the power and benefits of the service we provide.

I have a realtor friend who has been showing many homes to a very demanding client. She told me that she would LOVE to see more staged homes, because so many were a waste of time and effort to show a client who would immediately  turn around and walk out of a home that was not in excellent shape. Home sellers who stage their homes, far from being desperate, are wise to have the product they're selling be the best it can be.

So disappointing to hear a realtor saying these things about staging.  Price reductions, which are becoming the norm for unstaged homes, make the seller look desperate.  A well-staged home is the the sign of a smart seller, but usually not for long because in no time the home will be sold and the smart seller will no longer be a seller, but a happy person moving on with their life.

This comment comes from someone who doesn't understand marketing or staging.  It's a shame, but she'll either get it one day or find another profession.  Thanks for sharing.
