It would be impossible to over-clean a home that you are going to put on the market. When you’re getting ready to sell your home, try to look at your home through the buyer’s eyes. Walk through each room and scrutinize every detail from the baseboards to the ceiling and from your furniture to your windows. Think about and look at your property as if you were the buyer. Be brutally honest with yourself about everything you see and the way you think your house will appear to a buyer. If you find it hard to take a step back and be unbiased, you might want to bring in a trusted honest friend who will pull out all the stops and actually tell it like it is. If you are lucky enough to have such a friend, be sure that you take his or her advice and don’t take the critique personally. Your friend is there to help you.

Deep cleaning is highly recommended before your home is shown to buyers. Call it “sweat equity.” Elbow grease is cheap and will give you a high return on your investment of time. Get friendly with Mr. Clean® and a Magic Eraser®: These products are extremely effective and can be used all over your house.

Defects like fingerprints on walls, doors and light switches often get overlooked in our daily or weekly cleaning routines. The Magic Eraser® takes care of these problems very quickly and easily. The real problem is that we all have a tendency to look past these little smudges because we simply don’t notice them. It’s time to notice them now. Your floors, baseboards, trim, fireplaces, air-conditioning vents, countertops, cabinets and windows are also among the many other things that need to be sparkling clean.

All of these items are components of the house and must look like they’ve been well kept. If you can’t handle this amount of cleaning, you may want to hire a professional cleaning service as often as necessary to keep your house in check until it’s been sold.

Cleaning is easier when you’ve de-cluttered and removed items that aren’t essential. The less you have in your home, the less you have to clean, vacuum and dust. Cleaning is not something most of us enjoy, but the rewards of this time well spent will be realized when you successfully sell your home.
