The garage is one of the last places buyers will look when they tour a home. Generally, the garage gets only a quick glance. Luckily, buyers tend to be forgiving about the appearance of a garage and its contents. It should be noted, however, that one great selling feature of a home is a garage that can actually be used for the purpose it was designed: to park cars.

Tools, sports equipment, lawn mowers, extra freezers and other items often find a home in the garage as well. People often think of a garage as an additional storage area, so it needs to be featured as such. Make sure there is room for storage and vehicles. Many types of shelving can be used in a garage in conjunction with car space.

Many garages would benefit from a makeover. Not only are they used as storage units, but also two-car garages frequently can’t house even one car. When you’re moving, your excess furniture and boxes can easily start to accumulate in your garage. And while buyers may be forgiving in this area, that doesn’t mean they aren’t shocked or surprised by some seller’s garages. Resist the urge to store excess furniture and home decor in your garage when you are selling your home. Remember, the garage is still part of your house and shouldn’t be cluttered. Move your excess belongings to a storage unit for the short time that’s necessary for your home to be sold. Don’t be afraid to move some of the items in your garage into the storage unit as well.

There are many ways to spruce up your garage, and buyers will take notice. Garage makeovers are gaining in popularity. Showcasing your garage could potentially pay high dividends. Consider adding a fresh coat of paint to the walls, installing unique flooring options or putting in a new organizational system. A hydraulic lift can move larger items off the floor and allow you to showcase the space in your garage. If you don’t have the time or money to do a garage makeover, at least organize your garage and keep it as organized and neat as possible. Make sure buyers can see the space, not just the stuff.

One of the most desirable features in a garage is an electric garage door opener. If your garage isn’t already equipped with one, have one installed. It seems simple, but it might be the last little improvement that makes a buyer decide to purchase your home.
